Scope Note: The region of Alsace is located between Rhine River and the Vosges Mountains, incorporated for the most part into modern France. It was ruled by Rome, and then settled by Germanic peoples. It constituted the core of the Frankish duchy, then was broken into feudal principalities ruled by the Bishop of Strasbourg and the Hapsburgs in the 14th century. The area has alternately been a part of France and Germany until the end of World War II when the larger part of it became French. The common language is a German dialect known as Alsatian, while both French and German are taught in the schools.
