Biographical / Historical

Robert Lindsley was an American artist. At the time of this 1955 solo exhibition at Legion of Honor, he was studying at the University of California, Berkeley. He also studied at the University of Peking, China and University of Mexico, Mexico City. While in China, he became interested in the Chinese art form of stone rubbing, there making a collection and learning the technique. After studying Mexican archaeology in Mexico City, he brought this Chinese technique to Mexican subjects. This exhibition was intended to be the first of a series of studies of ancient American art. Little else is known about this artist.
