Biographical / Historical
By the time of this exhibition at the Legion of Honor in 1948, Bay Area art had formally broken away from the impressionist “School of Paris” and was establishing abstract expressionism taught at the California School of Fine Arts by Clyfford Still as the leader of the art scene. By 1950, Abstract Expression was an accepted style in San Francisco and it became the Bay Area Figurative Movement during the 1950s, led by Still, Mark Rothko, Richard Diebenkorn, David Park, and many others.
