Biographical / Historical
Arthur Sachs was an American investment banker born in 1880 who was well known for his art collection and his philanthropy. He was a member of the Harvard class of 1901. In 1929 he established two fellowships at Harvard for the advanced study of the fine arts, and in 1958 he set up a scholarship fund at his alma mater to give French students a chance to study at Harvard and Radcliffe. Sachs also donated toward the restoration of Chartres cathedral, and to the National Gallery of Art, the Fogg Museum, the Morgan Library, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. After retiring from Goldman, Sachs, and Co., Sachs spent much of his time in France, where he lent part of his famous collection to the Louvre. Sachs was a Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor. He died in 1975 in Cannes, France.
