Biographical / Historical

Gordon Blanding was born December 2, 1849 in Charleston, South Carolina and died September 11, 1945 in San Francisco, California. He was a wealthy San Francisco lawyer known for his landmark “Locksley Hall” mansion on Belvedere Island in the Bay Area. The world renowned Hearst Castle architect Julia Morgan designed the grounds and today the estate has been largely restored by the current owner. In 1941, Blanding donated 15 works of art to the Legion of Honor from his personal collection. Though little else is known about the donor, some works remain in the permanent collection of the Fine Arts Museums and some of the William Keith paintings are on permanent display in the de Young’s American galleries.
