Scope and Contents
An exhibition comparing native and indigenous art styles of central Africa and the Northwest Coast of the United States. The Northwest Coast section featured 75 objects, including totem poles, carved figures, rattles, dance masks, helmet masks, shaman’s pieces, food bowls, storage boxes, small canoes, canoe paddles, combs, fish hooks, woven hats, blankets, horn and wooden spoons, ceremonial wands, and a giant Haida house post. The African section featured 50 objects, including masks, figures, chieftain’s stools, messenger staffs, axes, shields, a divination bowl, and a door latch. The exhibition was arranged by Jermayne MacAgy.
The exhibition records span three folders and include object and price lists, planning correspondence, and registration receipts. The Bulletin of the California Palace of the Legion of Honor Vol. 10, No. 5 served as the exhibition catalog and is in the catalog collection. Object and installation photograph prints and negatives are in the photograph collection.
