Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

The Legion of Honor’s second annual exhibition of painting by living artists, featuring 250 works by both invited artists and juried artists, “unknowns” who submitted work to be shown. Though entitled the second annual, this was the third show in three years to feature juried contemporary works of art by American artists, following the First Spring Annual Exhibition in 1946 and Contemporary Painting of the United States in 1945. This exhibition was led in sponsorship by Paul Verdier, President of the Board of Trustees, who was joined by other members of the Board, as well as museum co-founder Alma de Bretteville Spreckels.
The exhibition records span 21 folders and include an exhibition description, entry forms, invitations, a price list, lists of artists and lenders, planning correspondence and notes, catalog information, correspondence regarding awards, the jury, publicity, general information, and rejected artists and lenders, lender correspondence, and registration receipts. A copy of the exhibition catalog is in the catalog collection. The Bulletin of the California Palace of the Legion of Honor Vol. 5, No. 7 & Vol. 5, No. 8 covered the exhibition and is available in the archives.
