Biographical / Historical

Frank Horowitz was born in Odessa, Russia in 1889. At the age of twelve, he apprenticed with a painter for two years. In 1905, he came to the United States and in 1912 became a naturalized citizen. From 1916 to 1917, he held a scholarship to the Pennsylvania Academy of Art and he returned to schooling there again from 1926 to 1927. In 1927, he exhibited his paintings at the Academy.

In 1928 Horowitz painted a series of portraits of prominent Jewish writers and poets in New York City. Later that same year, he held a successful solo exhibition that resulted in an assignment from James Rosenberg, the President of the Joint Distribution Committee, to go to Russia to paint a series of portraits of Jewish pioneers in Russia. Within three months, he completed forty paintings and fifty sketches in crayon and watercolor. He subsequently exhibited these works in Moscow.

Upon returning to the United States, Horowitz exhibited in Philadelphia, Cambridge, Massachusetts, Chicago, Baltimore, and all over New York City. This 1932 was his first in San Francisco.

Little is known about his later life.
