Biographical / Historical

The San Francisco Society of Women Artists (SSFWA), now called San Francisco Women Artists (SFWA), was founded in 1887 as the “Sketch Club” as an independent group of women artists who met to share and critique one another’s work. Notable former members include Ruth Asawa, Dorr Bothwell, Imogen Cunningham, Eleanor Dickenson, Claire Falkenstein, Emmy Lou Packard, Dorothy Winslade, and Ruth Bernhard. 28 members of the Society exhibited at the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition, which founded the de Young museum in Golden Gate Park. 1926 saw the first exhibition of the SSFWA, and they continued to have annual member exhibitions for the next 37 years at the Legion of Honor, the de Young, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Frida Kahlo’s painting ""Frieda and Diego Rivera"" was shown at this show, the Sixth Annual Exhibition of the San Francisco Society of Women Artists, which was noted as the first public showing of Kahlo’s work. SSFWA also exhibited at the 1939 Golden Gate International Exhibition and, in 1946, SSFWA was renamed as San Francisco Women Artists.
