Fifth International Exhibition of Pictorial Photography, September 16-October 7, 1928

 Sub-Series

Scope and Contents

The fifth annual exhibition of the Pictorial Photographic Society of San Francisco. About 200 photographic prints showing all processes and aspects of the pictorial photographic movement in North America, Europe, and Australia. European artists represented England, The Netherlands, Hungary, Scotland, Spain, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Germany, and Belgium, plus Australia. Canada and the U.S. represented North America.
Rather than show photographs from a jury selection, the exhibition presented the work of prominent pictorialists each of whom were specially invited to participate. This selection sought to provide comparison between the different processes of photographic representation as well as illustrated the possibilities of individual expression evidenced by the different characteristics of the prints.
The exhibition records include a few copies of the exhibition catalog which is housed in the Legion of Honor Exhibition Catalog collection.

Biographical / Historical

The Pictorial Photographic Society of San Francisco represented the pictorialism movement in the history of photography. It began in response to claims that a photograph was nothing more than a simple record of reality, and transformed into a national movement to advance the status of all photography as a true art form. Historians have recognized that pictorialism is more than just a visual style. It evolved in direct context with the changing social and cultural attitudes of the time, and, as such, it should not be characterized simply as a visual trend. One writer has noted that pictorialism was "simultaneously a movement, a philosophy, an aesthetic and a style."

Though the movement thrived from 1885 to 1915, the San Francisco Society was one of several camera clubs around the United States that explored the style. The California Camera Club, Southern California Camera Club, and Seattle Camera Club also operated on the West Coast.

Camera clubs in the U.S., England, France, Germany, Austria, Japan, and other countries regularly lent works to each other's exhibitions. The 1928 exhibition at the Legion of Honor was no exception. It featured about 200 works from countries ranging from North America to Europe to Oceania. Pictorialism gradually declined in popularity after 1920, although it did not fade out of popularity until the end of World War II.
