Scope and Contents

An exhibition of artworks from the Jacob Stern loan collection, initially shown shortly after being loaned indefinitely to the Legion of Honor in 1928. Little is known about this exhibition. However, the 1928 exhibition featured 42 paintings and 7 bronzes by Spanish artists from the seventeenth century, Dutch school artists of the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, Barbizon School and other French artists, American painters, Italian art, and bronze sculptures.

Biographical / Historical

Jacob Stern was an American businessman born in New York on April 5, 1851. He was one of the heirs of Levi Strauss & Co., which he inherited from his uncle Levi Strauss upon Strauss’ death in 1902. He was a San Francisco-based businessman and art collector. Known for a modest discernment and impressive taste in art, he kept a small collection of rare, high quality artworks. This collection he kept in his home where family and friends would visit to view them. He died in 1924.
