Biographical / Historical
On November 11, 1924, the California Palace of the Legion of Honor opened to the public in San Francisco, California. It was the realized vision of Alma de Bretteville Spreckels and her husband Adolph B. Spreckels. Inspired by the French Pavilion at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, which was modeled after the French Legion of Honor in Paris, Alma Spreckels sought to create a museum dedicated to French art as a gift to San Francisco.
Though the museum was initially largely stocked with artworks from Spreckels own collection, within two years of opening, Archer M. Huntington made the first of a series of important gifts to the museum. He donated a comprehensive collection of 18th century French art, given in memory of his father Collis P. Huntington. From there, several more benefactors joined him, including Henry K.S. Williams, who donated a large collection of European paintings to the museum in memory of his wife Mildred Anna Williams. This collection laid the foundation of the museum’s collection and to this day represents the core of the FAMSF European Paintings department. Other patrons included Albert Campbell Hooper, Albert M. Bender, Max Rosenberg, Gordon Blanding, and Mortimer Leventritt. For the 20th anniversary of the museum on November 11, 1944, the museum presented this exhibition.
