Scope and Contents

An exhibition of about 170 paintings by 7 American artists tracing the story of the Navy aviation program, from pre-flight training through combat action in the Pacific during World War II. The works were commissioned by the Abbott Laboratories with the purpose of presenting the activities of the navy to the public. The collection was then gifted to the U.S. Navy and was soon to be included in the Navy’s War Museum. Additionally, an exhibition of photographs of naval aviation by Edward J. Steichen were shown.
The exhibition records span 11 folders and include an exhibition description, artist biographies, publicity information, radio programming information, registration receipts, planning correspondence, lender correspondence, general correspondence, planning notes, and collateral. A copy of the exhibition catalog and a copy of The Bulletin of the California Palace of the Legion of Honor which covers the exhibition are in the catalog collection.

Abbott Laboratories is an American multinational medical devices and health care company with headquarters in Abbott Park, Illinois, United States. The company was founded by Chicago physician Wallace Calvin Abbott in 1888 to formulate known drugs; today, it sells medical devices, diagnostics, branded generic medicines and nutritional products.
