Biographical / Historical

Philip Lippincott Goodwin was an American architect and designer born on March 14, 1885. He was educated at Yale University, graduating in 1907. He then studied architecture at Columbia University, supplementing that with Parisian study from 1914-1915. Upon his return to the States, Goodwin undertook work with the New York office of Delano & Aldrich (1914-1916). His first partnership venture produced Goodwin, Bullard & Woolsey, but by 1921 he was practicing independently. While serving on the board of trustees of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, together with Edward Durell Stone, Goodwin designed a new building for the museum which opened in 1939. They still occupy this building alongside several expansions. Goodwin retired from practice in 1953 and died in 1958.
