Biographical / Historical
1938 and 1939 marked the first instances of the increased accessibility at both the Legion of Honor and the de Young. Under Dr. Walter Heil, special rooms and gallery talks were scheduled to increase the diversity of visitors to the museums. This included not only exhibitions and talks for the blind but also the introduction of educational programming for children and families. The late 1930s indicates the beginning of the Fine Arts Museums commitment to educational programming for our communities that continues to the present.
